"White 80, set, hut, hut!" The center snaps the ball to the quarterback. He drops back to pass. You hold your breath as he scans the field for an open receiver. The offensive line pushes back the defenders as the middle linebacker streaks through the opening, aiming to sack the QB. At the last second, he finds his target and uncorks a deep ball, taking a hit as he does so. The ball seems to float in the air for what seems like minutes, as the time clock etches closer to zero. It’s caught! Touchdown!

The 2025 Gamecocks Season
As of writing this article, the 2025 season is underway for the Gamecocks, led by head coach Shane Beamer. The USA Today Sports Network SEC Coach of the Year in 2024, Beamer aims to develop his team into a force to be reckoned with, and based on how the season opener went, he’s doing just that.
The game against Virginia Tech at Mercedes-Benz Stadium was more than just four quarters of play, it was a national spotlight moment. South Carolina’s defense made a statement, holding the Hokies to under 200 yards. Fans gathered in Columbia to celebrate the 31-24 victory, bringing that desirable Southern energy to several local restaurants and bars.
By the time they returned to Williams-Brice for their first home game, you could practically hear the Sandstorm song echoing throughout the city. With quarterback LaNorris Sellers making highlight-reel plays on every snap, the Gamecocks are setting up what will be another successful season. Beamer’s squad is ready to dominate deep into the season, sure to excite all Gamecocks fans for years to come.
Highlights so far:
- Season Opener: 31-24 win vs. Virginia Tech in Atlanta
- Home Debut: 38-10 victory vs. South Carolina State
- First SEC Test: 35-13 win vs. Kentucky
Inside Williams-Brice Stadium
If you’ve never seen the inside of Williams-Brice Stadium, you’re missing out. Seating more than 77,000 eager fans, it’s one of the loudest and most passionate venues in all of college football. Named after the great Martha Williams-Brice and her husband Thomas, this stadium is currently the 16th largest on-campus football stadium in all of the United States. It’s no wonder you can hear the pounding of feet and the Sandstorm chant from miles away!
Game day traditions include:
- The Cockaboose Horn: Blasting before kickoff and after every big play.
- The Garnet Walk: Players march through the crowd to enter the stadium.
- The Flyover: F-16 jets race across the sky before each kickoff.
It’s not just a football game here, it’s a spectacle of sounds, colors, and emotions that help to define the Southern traditions of South Carolina.

Tailgating: An SEC Rite of Passage
When they’re not in the stadiums, chances are the fans will be tailgating. By Friday night (yes the day before), parking lots are filled with RVs, tents, and grills as fans settle in for an exciting weekend ahead.
Some of the best tailgating areas include:
- Gamecock Park: This spot is known for the best setups, live music and food trucks.
- Heyward Street: Alumni cookouts rain supreme here, along with over long-standing family traditions
- South Carolina State Fairgrounds: Right near the stadium, it’s a perfect spot to crack open a cold one.
The food alone is worth the trip, where you can find things like smoked brisket, pulled pork, shrimp and grits, and, of course, beer. Tailgating isn’t just a way to kick off the game, it’s a social ritual. Fans from all over swap stories of teams’ past while their kids play pick-up games in the parking lot. The laughter that echoes throughout the lots is something that you’ll cherish forever.
